What to Expect

Explore the UNESCO acclaimed ruins of Pompeii with an official guide, followed by a trek to the crater of Mt. Vesuvius, the still active volcano that brought life here to a fiery end in 79 AD, all on this private day trip from Naples port. During this comprehensive and fascinating tour of Pompeii and Vesuvius, you’ll discover why this UNESCO World Heritage Site and the infamous volcano that made it all possible continue to shock and fascinate the 2.8 million people who venture here each year from all over the world.

Visiting Pompeii

After meeting your personal driver and licensed guide at the cruise terminal in Naples, travel aboard a private air-conditioned car straight to the archaeological area of Pompeii. During the journey, your guide – an archaeologist or classical historian – provides an introduction to the site and the amazing sights you’ll encounter within. Once in Pompeii, you’ll benefit from skip-the-line, pre-booked entry and an expertly planned route uncovering the most representative sites inside the archaeological area.

Walk Pompeii’s main streets just as its ancient inhabitants did over stones still worn with the tracks from the carts and chariots that tread them nearly 2,000 years ago and even see the graffiti they left behind. Your officially licensed Pompeii guide will take you to visit the forum, the center of Pompeii’s political and social life, the newly-opened Domus, as well as view the startling plaster death casts of the victims of the catastrophic eruption that destroyed this ancient Roman city, ‘freezing’ their last moments forever.

Hike up the Mount Vesuvius

After your adventurous morning exploring Italy’s most renowned ruins, you’ll take a leisurely lunch break before heading up the lush slopes of the Mt. Vesuvius to see firsthand what lead to Pompeii’s demise.  As you wind your way up the roads leading to the summit, you’ll see the lava flows that have scarred the sides of the volcano through the lush volcanic vegetation.

From the parking area, it is just a 20-minute hike to the crater on a soft volcanic ash and pumice path to get to the fantastic view from the top. In addition to the panorama of Naples, you will also be able to see the islands of Capri and Ischia in the distance, all from a height of over 4,000 feet. Once you return to the car, your driver will accompany you back to the port in time to board your cruise ship.
